During Your Exchange

HALLYM UNIVERSITY

Once you arrive on campus, you will be met by your buddy and they will bring you to International Office. You will be given your timetable, bedding and then taken to your accommodation by your buddy.

You will also begin the process of applying for your ‘Alien Registration Card’ ARC during your first day on campus, around one week later all exchange students will visit immigration to register their finger print scans. It takes around 4-6 weeks to receive your ARC, so please do not leave the country before you receive it (weekend trip to Japan, for example) as you will be denied re-entry into Korea without your ARC.

The orientation for all new exchange students typically takes place on the Friday before the start of the new academic semester. It is vital you attend so that you have the opportunity to meet all of the new exchange students, sign up for phone coverage (if you wish), sign up for the free gym and have a campus tour.

During the ‘Add-Drop period’ International Office will assist you in course registration. (This is typically during the first week of the semester). During this period, students are able to add or drop courses if they wish (assuming there are still seats in each class).

*Please note, that seats may become available on courses, as other exchange students, or Korean students change classes, during the whole add/drop class period. *

A class taught in English is automatically canceled, if less than 10 students register for that class. In other words, if 10 or more students register, the class will be delivered as planned.

Incoming exchange students are encouraged to join Hallym’s Intermural Sport Leagues and student clubs. This is possible by signing up for them during the first week of the semester during the various recruitment fairs.

During the weekends, most exchange students like to explore Korea. Seoul is a one-hour bus or train journey away with a one-way journey typically costing around $6

Chuncheon also has lots of things to offer exchange students, especially if you are an ‘outdoors’ kind of person!

Below is a video that one of our previous exchange students made. In it he demonstrates how it’s possible to use technology to overcome any language barriers and maximize your experience in Korea.
